Weather Vagaries
Lulled into a sense of false security by a sequence of fine warm days at the beginning of the week, Northlanders who had visions of days on the beach this week-end have been sadly disillusioned by the demonstration of meteorological vagaries, which commenced on Thursday.
A rapid deterioration of conditions occurred within the space of a few hours.
A sharp drop in temperatures and a sudden wind change caused the summery mildness to be replaced by mid-wintery weather. The mercury dropped smartly from 58 degrees at 8 a.m. on Thursday to 48 degrees at the same time on Friday. Heavy rain, mixed sometimes with hail, swept across Northland. High winds, reaching gale force in exposed places, battered gardens. Coastal shipping was held up by heavy seas all along the coast. Cast-off winter woollies suddenly found favour again. This morning the mercury had climbed again to 52 degrees but the weather was still far from pleasant. Today’s forecast was for moderate south-westerly winds, isolated showers, cool temperatures and mainly fair conditions.
