Brisbane Cat-Owners Killing Their Pets

GASTRO-ENTERITIS FEAR

(Received 11 a.m.) BRISBANE, This Day. HUNDREDS of cat-owners in Brisbane are killing their pets because they fear the cats may be carriers of gastro-enteritis.

Eighty-four children have died in 1 Brisbane from gastro-enterities since June of last year, and 27 children are now in hospital with this disease. The secretary of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Mr O’Sullivan) fears a plague of rats in the city if the slaughter continues.

More than 130 cats have been taken to the society for destruction in the past two days. All were fine, healthy animals, and, according to Mr O’Sullivan, were making a useless sacrifice. The director of the Queensland institute of Medical Research (Dr lan Mackerras) said there was no definite proof yet that cats were carriers or gastro-enteritis.
