Metal Trades Will Work Only 40 Hours

01.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. A meeting of union officials and shop stewards in the metal trades carried a resolution that metal trades workers should refuse to work longer lhan 40 hours a weel* after September 15.

It was pointed out that this would only be effective if the Australasian Council of Trades Unions Congress in Melbourne next week rejected a similar proposal, and if the Arbitration Court had not reached a favourable decision on the 40-hour week by that date.

It was explained to the meeting that if the congress agreed to the proposal from the Ironworkers’ Union to refuse to work longer than 40 hours a week after September 15, it would be unnecessary for the meeting to proceed with its decision.

The meeting represented about 100,000 workers.
