Plane Crashes When One Engine Fails

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. An RNZAF Anson, flying from Ohakea to Rongotai to take the Chief of the Australian General Staff (Lieuten-ant-General Sturdee) to Auckland, was wrecked shortly after 9.30 today when it crashed into a ditch after making a forced landing on one engine at Paraparaumu airfield.

The machine, piloted by FlightLieutenant J. C. Stewart, had three passengers.

No one was hurt. The machine left Ohakea at 9.15 and when it got into difficulty after one engine had failed, the pilot prepared to make a forced landing at Paraparaumu.

On touching down at 9.43 the aircraft overran the length of the airstrip and crashed into a ditch at the northern end of the north-south boundary.

The plane was badly damaged and was stated today to be a complete write-off.

On official inquiry will be held

Considering the extent of the damage, it is considered fortunate that the pilot and passengers escaped injury.

General Sturdee left Rongotai in a Dominie aircraft at 10.42 a.m.
