Auckland Harbour Bridge In 10 Years
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Construction of a bridge across the Auckland Harbour is, in general principle, supported by the Government. This was announced by the Minister of Works (Mr Semple) today. He said it was not possible to forecast the date when actual construction work would commence. The Royal Commission which inquired into transharbour facilities estimated that the approximate period to allow for necessary engineering and economic aspects of a work of this magnitude, and for letting of a firm contract, would be five years. The construction period also was estimated to be five years, so. on this basis, it would be 10 years before the bridge was an accomplished fact, Mr Semple said. Steps had been taken to peg the values of land at the bridge approaches to prevent profiteering.
