GRAHAM BELL CENTENNIAL

A tribute to the inventor of the telephone (Alexander Graham Bell) has been paid by an organisation interest', d in another method of communication.

The Canadian Philatelic Society has issued a special cover commemorating the birth ■of the celebrated inventor. A copy of the envelope, which was posted on March 3, arrived in Whangaj ( i today. It was addressed to Major C. 11. Morley, of the Salvation Army. Attractively designed, it bears the Icl lowing wording: ••Commemorating the birth of Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone. 1847-1947.’’ Beneath a photograph of a house >s the lettering: "The birthplace of the telephone, Brantford, Canada, the telephone city.” Four large stamps, measuring 1.1 in. by Uin., dominate the envelope. They are engraved with a picture nf Bell .and an an gel which hovers over a drawing of the globe, appears to be crowning him for his service to mankind. Telephone lines are drawn in the background. A folder enclosed in the envelope states that the Bell homestead at Tutela Heights, Brantford. Ontario. Canada, was where the first draft specifications were prepared; where the telephone was invented and the first public demonstration was given. “In this centennial year of his birth, throughout the civilised world, tribute is being paid to the greatness of the man who died in 1922 at his summer home in Cape Breton Island, Canada, at-the end of a long and fruitful life devoted to (lie advancement of human knowledge," the folder states.
