Start Loading Black' Ships
(Rec. 1 p.m.) SYDNEY. This Day. The largest Dutch freighter afloat, the Tjibesar, of 11,000 tons, which has been laid up in Sydney harbour since November by a union ban, is being loaded today with Dutch Army equipment by Dutch soldiers, ip cooperation with the Australian Army and Navy. The cargo is being freighted by tanklanding ship, and loaded by the Tjibesar’s own winches.
The owners admitted that the ship had been transferred to the control of the Dutch Navy. When the vessel arrived at Melbourne on November 5 from the Netherlands East Indies, carrying 200 Malayan and Javanese labourers to load Dutch equipment, the watersiders threatened to tie up all ships in port if foreign labour was used. The Tjibesar arrived at Sydney on January 24 to load landing barges and surf boats for Indonesia and has been held here since. The Dutch liner Tasman, which has been working Australian ports for come months, despite the ban by watersiders, struck trouble when attempting her usual practice of leaving Melbourne for Sydney without a tug. A rope fouled her rudder and propellers and after 24 hours’ work, divers are still unable to release the chip.
