Hospital Rate Protest At Ballot Box
The ballot box is the place where farmers, ratepayers and property owners can register their protest against the incidence of hospital rating. This suggestion had been made by the Prime Minister (Mr Fraseri when the Counties" Association had discussed the question with him, the chairman (Cr J. Morrison) told the Whangarei County Council today "That time is close now." he commented. He was discussing information from the association that the rate of Ad in the £ on capital value would
become operative on March. 31, 1947
As far as the Whangnrci county was concerned there would be a benefit of about £2500. he said. The levy this year was £12,750, about 50 per cent of the total general rate collected. There was nothing the council could do about it but leave the question to good sense of the farmers to deal with. DO NOT REALISE Cr W. C. B. Powell said the ratepayers did not realise the amount of money which went in hospital rates. "They think that when they pay their rates all the money will be spent on their roads,” he said. ‘‘The hospital rate takes an immense amount of-money. "They don't work out the percentage of their rates that goes to the hospital. They would rather bully the councillors. "The fullest publicity should be given to the position, and the. public will know what goes in hospital rates.” No motion was put before the meeting.
