First Apples For Britain Since 1940
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day The ship Roslin Castle will leave Wellington for Britain on April i« with 25.000 cases of apples. This will be- the first shipment of apples to Britain since 1940. In the early months of the war it was found necessary to discontinue the export of apples to Britain in order to conserve the space on merchant ships for more urgently needed and less bulky food cargoes.
The British markets in pre-war years received from 1.000.000 to 1,700,000 cases, varying with the seasonal yield. A total of 130.000 cases is being shipped this season, ihe largest consignment on the Athlone Castl*?, which is taking a full cargo from Wellington on May 8. A further 25.000 cases will be loaded aboard the Port Lincoln, which is scheduled to sail from Wellington on May 16 for Hull.
Five varieties of apples are represented in the shipments, Delicious.. Sturmers. Doherty. Rome Beauty and Statesman.
