Tradition Upheld At Combined Whangarei High School Sports

A proud tradition has boon established by the Whangarei High School during the 20 years that it has made a display of athletic prowess an annual feature of its activities. The 1946 combined spoils of the boys and girls’ institutions, which concluded on Saturday, added strength to that tradition. From every viewpoint, the carnival was an inspiring spectacle and ■pupils and staffs are deserving of congratulation on the fine success that attended their efforts. The splendid day was perfectly climaxed with the march-past of house teams and the ceremony of congratulation for the three champions of each

school and the leading houses. THE SCHOOL CHAMPIONS The boy champions for the year are M. T. Khan (senior), G. Brice (intermediate) and N. Chainey (junior). Points were scored as follows: Senior: M. T. Khan 24. T. Brown 15, T. Beehre 13. Intermediate: G. Brice 18. B. Calder 16. K. Neil 3, K. Chenery 8. Junior: N. Chainey 21. I. Summers 15. R. Pride 8. The champion houses were Marsden (boys) and Lupton (girls). Only four points separated the two top -boys’ houses, the final tallies in each school being:— Boys: Marsden 165 i. Carruth 161),, Hobson 129, Grey 67i. Girls: Lupton 480. Piodney 432. Cook 235. Selwyn 205.

ONE RECORD BROKEN One boys’ school record was broken and another equalled. The new record-holder is T. Brown, who clipped a fifth ot a second off’ the time of 16 4-5 seconds established last year by L. P. Johnson in the 120 yards senior championship. Brown set the new figure in the second heat of this event..

In the first heat of the junior hurdles championship over 75 yards, t Summers breasted the tape in 11 4-5 seconds, which was the record time held conjointly by S. Brooks (1940) and M. Jones (1945).

The marching am; general appearance of the house teams in the* final parade merited the applause that was so liberally accorded.

The champion girls’ team, Lupton, vjtn its banner proudly carried by the captain, Verna Edge, led the procession. followed by Rodney <Rac Boucher). Cook (Rae Gribblei and Selwyn (Marion Marshall'.

The girls were smart and attractive in their navy blue and white, and the white sox, worn for the first time, set their dress off nicely.

The boys, 100. were neat and pleas ing to the eye in their navy blue and grey.

Marsden. led by v ,J. Kerr, was in pride of place, with Carruth (O Guest). Hobson (B. Hill) and Grej r (E Dunn) succeeding in that order. Actu ally. Guest substituted as leader of Carruth, the house captain, D. Bryson being unable to parade owing to a sprained ankle. CONGRATULATORY REMARKS’ The six champions and captains of each winning house were congralukited by the chairman of the board i f governors (Mr G. A. Bothell). Mr Bet hell apologised for the absence of the principal of the boys' high school (Mr A. R. Ryder), who had had tc leave the ground on account of ill-health. In complimenting the champions, the speaker also praised the other competitors fer the fine showing they had put up and the staff’s for their flawless organisation.
