Australian Governor Of N. South Wales
(Roc. 1 p.rn.) SYDNEY. This Day. Referring to the appointment of General Lane Northcott as first Australian Governor of New South Wales, the Daily Telegraph says that the premier (Mr McKell) deserves congratulation on two counts. Firstly, he establishes the. State Government's right to submit a recommendation directly to the King without securing the paternal approval of the Dominions’ Office; secondly, with that point won. he did not yield to temptation to make the appointment an opportunistic political one. The only other Australian to hold a vice-regal position was Sir Isaac Isaacs as Governor-General, appointed by Mr Scullin. The Sydney Morning Herald notes that the appointment will mean the withdrawal of the Empire commander in Japan only a few months after commencing his duties and states that the policy of appointing Australians as the King's representatives will be strongly questioned.
