Atom - Driven Planes, Warships

NEW YORK, Mar. 31. The United States Navy 40.000,000.-000-dollar peactime Navy search programme includes an investigation ot the use of atomic energy as a propulsive force for battleships, the development of nuclear munitions and the education of persccinel in the application of nuclear energy, said Rear-Ad-miral Harold Bowen to members of the Association for the Advancement of Science. He emphasised the possibility of an atomic-driven battleship in the near future and pointed out that such a vessel would have a speed unheard of, and a cruising radius dictated only by the amount of provisions that could bo ca rried. The navy also hoped to develop atomic bomb-carrying planes with speeds well over 1000 miles an hour. RUSSIA HAS SECRET Russia already has an atom bomb in the opinion of Dr Reuben Gustavson, research publicist for the University of Chicago. He told the YWCA Foreign Affairs Institute that there was no secret involved in the bomb's fundamental principles.
