Increased Price For Export Meat, Butchers’ Subsidy To Be Raised

(Special.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Increases of |d per lb. for lamb and 2s per lOOlbs. for quarter beef are shown in the opening export schedule prices for meat for the 1945-46 season, which were announced yesterday by the Minister for Marketing. The Minister said that, to offset the effect on butchers’ costs of these increases in the export schedule, necessary adjustments will be made in the amount of the retail meat subsidy payable to butchers. “When the wages provisions of the stabilisation regulations were amended in February, the Prime Minister renewed his assurance to farmers that the effect of adjustments in the wages structure on the primary industries would be given very careful consideration in the light of the general undertakings given to them at the time the original stabilisation policy was announced,” said Mr Roberts. “It is in accordance with those undertakings that discussions have recently taken place between the Government and the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board.

“In agreement with the board, the Government has decided to increase the -opening export schedule prices of the 1945-46 season for lamb by per lb. and for quarter beef by 2s per lOOlbs. These amounts have been decided upon after thorough investigation of the extent to which the cost of producing meat will be increased during the coming season.” The new opening rates are:— Lamb: Prime Down-cross and prime Canterbury, 231 b to 421 b, 9£d per lb; 43 to 501 b, 9d; 51 to 561 b, Bid. Prime crossbred, 23 to 421 b, 9jd per lb; 43 to 501 b, 8“d; 51 to 561 b, B!,d. Seconds, 23 to 421 b, B.id per lb; 43 to 501 b, Bd. Quarter Beef: Ox, good average quality, all weights, 42s per 1001 b; f.a.q., all weights, 375. Heifer, g.a.q., all weights, 41s per lpOlb; f.a.q., all weights, 365. Cow, g.a.q., all weights, 35s 6d per 1001 b; f.a.q.. all weights, 30s 6d.

The Minister concluded that the chairman ©f the Meat Producers’ Board (Mr G. H. Grigg) had expressed his satisfaction at having reached a settlement.
