Linen Flax Crop
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Minister for Industries and Commerce (Hon. D. G. Sullivan) announced yesterday that, the British Government was.prepared to accept as the final crop of linen flax under the 1940 agreement 10.000 acres to be sown by November 30, 1945. This acreage had been allocated over the various areas as follows:—Blenheim. 1500; Geraldine, 1150; Washdvke. 2000; Winton, TC00; Methven, 1500; Fairlie, 1250; Makikihi, 1500. The crop would be harvested in January and February next, and the processed fibre would be shipped to Britain, said the Minister. It was* conservatively estimated that with the fibre from the 1945 crop New Zealand will have supplied 0770 tons of linen fibre, valued at £1.554.124. and 3531 tons of tow. valued at £254.663 —a total value of £1.808,787 —to the British Ministry of Supply for spinning cordage threads, yams. etc. Mr. i Sullivan said that the results of this assistance afid the development of the industry as a whole represen!ed a great achievement in the Dominion’s contribution to helping Britain with vital war material. The Minister asked farmers to take up the acreages allotted their particular districts, thus enabling the factories to keep in operation and to .retain the factory workers in employment;, until the post-war organisation which wpuld take over the factories was in a position to do so. \
