Preparations For Census Next Month

Preparations for taking the forthcoming Dominion-wide census of population in the Whangarei County, which constitutes Special Census District No. 5. have been commenced. Enumerator appointed for the Whangarei County is the Postmaster (Mr F. Auld).

For census purposes, the county has been divided into 22 population areas, each of which again has been divided into two or three sections. Enumerators for each district have been appointed and, at the scheduled period, will deliver and collect the returns. Every householder within the Whangarei County will be asked to fill in a dwelling schedule. In addition, the occupier is obliged to see that a pro-perly-completed personal schedule is furnished for every person who resides in the dwelling on Tuesday, September 25, and was alive at midnight between the 25th and 26th. or who arrived at. or returned to, the dwelling on September 26 without being included in the census elsewhere. Such questions as whether water is laid on to the dwelling, whether it has a hot-water service, a bath or shower are included in the dwelling schedule. A census of poultry is also taken, one. question concerning the total number of hens’ eggs produced over the past 12 months: This question, however, is not compulsory and the occupier is asked to answer only if fairly reliable figures can be given. The personal file, which every person residing" in New Zealand is to complete, asks numerous and varied questions, covering personal and business life. One of these is how long the journey from home to place of work takes. Another is a request for the total number of working days lost during the year ended June 30, 1945, while yet another is a request for income from all sources for the 12 months ended March 31, 1945. For Maoris, a bi-lingual sheet, including both personal and dwelling schedule, has been compiled. One of these schedules will be delivered to every house occupied by Maoris within the county, and particulars of every resident are to be completed. ' "
