Rift In Lute Not For Borough Council

That the council table was not the place to air any difference that might exist between two outside organisations was made clear by the Mayor (Mr W. Jones), at a special meeting cf the Whangarei Borough Council last night, when reference was made to the attitude of the Ratepayers’ Association to the Progressive Society.

It started when Cr. J. F. Johnson proposed that Cr. W. L. McKinnon be appointed to the waterworks committee of the council and, in doing so, he said that he supposed that he would “get the cane’’ for making the nomination. The Mayor then said that such treatment would not come from the council and to this Cr. Johnson re* plied, “No, but from outside.” Council Not the Butt

The Mayor then stated that he did not want any reference at the council table to such matters that concerned not the council but two outside organisations. “I am not going to allow the borough council to be made the butt for either the Ratepayers’ Association or the Progressive Society,” said the Mayor, who . continued by saying that there was room in the town for both organisations, but they must look to the good of the town. Referring to statements that had been made at a meeting on Wednesday night and published yesterday, the Mayor said that many mis-state-ments had been made. Persons concerned should come to the borough council for’ information regarding borough affairs and such information as was sought would be truthfully given by the council. Not Like Reference.

Raising to a point of order, Cr. Johnson said that he did not like the Mayor’s reference to the Progressive Society. When told that the two organisations were cracking at each other, Cr. Johnson replied to the effect that the Ratepayers’ Association was cracking at the Progressive Society, but the society had not taken any action or made any remarks against the association.
