Anzac Day Messages From Pacific, Italy
(Official War Correspondent N.Z.E.F.) NISSAN ISLAND, April 25
Commanders of New Zealand divisions in the Pacific and Europe enchanged the following Anzac Day messages: General Barrowclough to General Freyberg: “New Zealand Pacific Force allies itself with you in pride and grief, which mark each anniversary df Anzac Day. YVe congratulate you on continued valour and splendid perseverance in the hard struggle for Rome, and send our deep sympathy for such losses as you have had to suffer. YVe hope for your early success. \Y r e now cherish the memory of our own dead and claim closer brotherhood with you, founded on common sacrifice."
General Freyberg to General Barrowclcugh: "Your Anzac Day message will be read by all ranks here with deep appreciation. On the anniversary of the Landing Anzacs c>: this generation will remember the close bonds which unite us in the theatres of war all over the world. Greeting and congratulations of the Third Division on your great success in the Pacific."
These messages were read by General Barrowclough at a special parade to-day at Pacific divisional forward headquarters. Senior Padre Gerard, in an address, said the division in the Solomons were now commemorating their own comrades who had fallen for the same heritage as the original Anzacs. Senior Padre Gerard appealed for the continuance of the war’s co-operation into the day of peace. New Zealand was not yet leading the world in co-operation as it might, and it was for the soldiers, when they returned home, to carry on the responsibility of a joint effort within the country for the maintenance and the heritage earned and paid for on the battlefields.
