Australian-Built Ships
MELBOURNE. This DayTwo 9000-ton freighters were launched at Australian shipyards on Saturday. Three vessels of this class have been commissioned for some time and eight others are in various stages of construction. The Minister for the Navy (Mr. Makin), said that the ships were 90 per cent. Australian. This applied to hull, engines and fittines. He announced that in 20 months up to the end of March, nearly 6000 merchant vessels, aggregating more than 4,000,000 tons, had undergone repairs and maintenance at Australian yards. During the same period 832 ships, totalling about 2,900,CC0 tons, had been dry docked or. slipped.
