5-Year Bridge Scheme Too Costly: Whangaroa

(Special)

KAEO, This Day.

Concern over the cost of the Public Works Department’s five-year bridge rebuilding plan was expressed strongly at this week’s meeting of the Whangaroa County Council at Kaeo. A letter is to bo sent to the Public Works Department stating that the council is not able to meet tiie increased costs. Discussion was caused by reading of a letter from the Public Works Department intimating that Whangaroa’s share of the bridge scheme would be £7700, plus additional amounts which might be added. 'Plie first year’s cost would not be £OOO, as originally forecasted, but £I3OO. And that figure could not be regarded as the final one. The council’s resolution was moved by Mr. L. M. Dane, the chairman (Mr. I'. 11. Hayes) seconding. It was stated during discussion that the Pupiike and Woods bridges, which have just been renewed, were not included in the totals.
