Full Pressure As War Reaches Decisive Stage

(Received 2 p.m.) (8.0. W.) RUGBY, January 17. The supreme Allied commander in the Mediterranean theatre (General Sir Henry Maitland Wilson) said today that the war was now reaching a decisive stage, says an Algiers correspondent. It was the aim of the Allies to apply maximum - pressure on the Germans wherever they could be got at. General Wilson said. Germany had three of the most uneasy allies in Central Europe, three who would be ready to liquidate their positions before the final crash if they had the chance. "Mv policy is to strike at Germany with maximum force whenever the opportunity offers in the Mediterranean,” he said. “The immediate objective in Italy is to capture Rome, but the Mediterranean fronts extends from the Balkans to Tyrrhenian."
