Two Nazi Merchantmen Hit By Torpedoes
(Rec. 1.45 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 17. A New Zealand torpedo-bomber squadron flying Beaufighters took part in an attack against German merchantmen off the Norwegian coast recently. They flew through heavy fire from escorts and shore batteries. One Beaufighter, captained by an English flightcommander. hit a medium-sized ship. “There Avas a large flash as one torpedo got home. Then a Avhitish smoke which turned to black and hung like a mushroom over the ship for some time.” he said. “Hits were also scored by cannon on other vessels.” During an engagement in which an additional ship Avas hit by another squadron, seven Messerschmitt 109 s were encountered, three of which made six separate attacks on one Beaufighter which in a violent evasive action Avas pursued for 30 miles but shook off the enemy and returned undamaged. None of the crew was in--1 j ured.
