Avro York Is Britain’s Best Transport Plane
(Received 1.30 p.m.) (8.0. W.) RUGBY. January 17. The “Avro York," twin sister to the Lancaster bomber, has had its first private view. The machine is a freighter with a maximum cargo capacity of 10J tons. It is a monoplane with a 102-feet wing span, acid 78 feet in length. It has four Rolls-Royce Merlin or four Bristol Hercules engines. giving a speed of 300 miles an hour. It is a utility aircraft, but is the lai’gest transport plane produced inBritain.
Its twin brother, a passenger plane, carries 50 people. With a range of over 3000 miles, it can carry light tanks and dismantled aircraft, etc. The weight is 30 tons and its height 20 feet. Correspondents saw four jeeps stowed away in the huge fuselage, and there was still room for more freight.
It is a direct off shoot of the famous Lancaster bomber, and the Avro Company are to manufacture it without detriment to output. The Lancaster’s fuselage is underslung like that of a racing car, but its proportions are those of a limousine.. Some 101 tons of freight can be transported 500 . miles, but a load of eight tons would make possible a journey of 1500 miles. The designer is Mr. Roy Chadwick.
