Governor Launches Health Stamp Campaign
(P-A.) WELLINGTON. This Day. In the course of a broadcast speech m support or the health stamp campaign the Governor-General (Sir Cyril Newali) .stated last night: ‘'We are' fighting this, the greatest war known to history, in order that our children shall receive from cur hands a heritage which we hold in trust for them. We are fighting that they may live the lives we "'would have them live as free and responsible citizens of a nation, an empire and a world where tyranny and oppression shall not prevail. Throughout our struggle, therefore, vve must never allow ourselves to forget those who are children today. Their spiritual, mental and physical well-being must bo the first consideration with us. We cannot do too much for thorn. Derive Lasting Benefit
“It Is particularly about what we can do for their physical wellbeing that I am speaking tonight. When King George V died, it was most fittingly decided that funds collected for a memorial to that beloved monarch should be used to build and i-quip permanent health camps for the children of New Zealand. There are l‘> rueh camps in New Zealand, though three of necessity have been handed over to ihc military authorities, and every year some thousands of ailing children derive lasting benefit from the treatment and care they receive in these camps. Without them, many ol' these children would be deprived of any form of healthful recreation and attention. They play a most important part in New Zealand's policy of child welfare.” Of Highest Importance
Proper maintenance of these camps which is in the hands of the Federation of Health klamps. depends on the support of the public, and, added Sir Cyril, he was asking for that support. He announced a new issue of health stamps as from today, commenting that these were the first triangular stamps ever to be issued in this country. From every one of the 1 ‘sd stamps, the public bought, a half-penny would go to the health camp fund and for every 3d stamp, one penny would go to the fund. It was hoped to raise at least £25.000 in this way. He was sure that the people , would do their share and enable this goal to be attained, for he knew how generous the people of New Zealand were in supporting any really worth while cause. This was a cause of the highest possible importance, for the health and happiness of many of the next generation depended upon it.
