FLOWERS
j The present is a good time for spraying with white oil to destroy scale, thrips, leaf-hoppers, and red spider. j Prepare the ground well for delphiniums, particularly the tall varieties. Deep soil and plenty of lime rubble and well-rotted manure should be used. For summer-flowering the following may be planted in the mixed border; Gypsophila, statics, verbena, alonsoa, nicotiana, ageratum, agathea, scabiosa, perennial sunflower, helenium, calceolaria, stokesia, calliopsis, larkspur, gaillardia, pyrethrum, dimorphoteca. Plant poeonies in partial shade in good soil to which leaf mould has been added. Plant montbretia and watsonia in firm ground that has not been manured. The yellow arum lilies and gladioli should be planted now for early-summcr flowers. There is still time to sow sweet peas. Use strands of black cotton or wire-netting to keep away the birds. Continue to plant hardy trees, and shrubs; also hedge plants.
