Further Liquor Control

Figures were quoted by the actingMinister for Customs (Mr. Nordvneyer) in a letter received by the Auckland Presbytery last night. explaining recent Government steps to control further the liciuor trade. The letter stated that the value of the import licenses for spirits and wines this vear was only half of the figure for 1938, but, having regard to the increased prices, it was estimated that the actual quantity was approximately 35 per cent, of the 1938 total. It was further stated that the amount of sugar allotted to brewers was 50 per cent, of last year’s quantity, and the alcoholic content of tac-cr had been appreciably reduced. The letter added that further restrictive regulations were being prepared which would, the writer believed, “achieve " very desirable increase of sobriety.” .. The Moderator (Rev. J. D. Smith) said a result very different from the Minister’s figures had been presented by figures compiled after investigation by the New Zealand Alliance. These showed, also, that the local production of wine had very considerably increased.
The question of reducing the present high alcoholic content ol' wine was referred to the public questions committee.
