Appeals For Farmers
(Spec.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday.
Acting on advice from the Director of Primary Production, Mr R. B. Tennent, the North Taranaki Council of Primary Production has decided to lodge appeals against the calling up for military service of essential farm labour in cases in which employers are unwilling to appeal. District committees of the council are to be asked to cooperate.
“Because the withdrawal of manpower from farms to serve in the armed forces was now causing difficulty in carrying on farming, councils should take more active steps to conserve essential manpower,” (wrote Mr Tennent. “Farmers should be advised that it is their duty to appeal for the retention of essential labour and the council should lodge appeals itself where it is considered such action is justified.”
The chairman. Mr H. E. Blyde, commented that in the past the council had opposed taking action about appeals, but he considered the time had now arrived when the council should act.
