Gerald Frank Gilbert Smith, aged 56. a labourer at the Southdown Freezing Works, was placed on probation for two years, ordered to make full restitution at the rate of 10/- weekly and to take out a prohibition order. The police said Smith was a delegate to the Freezing Workers' Union and was issued with books of membership tickets valued at £1 each. He was entitled to receive 10 per cent of the money accounted for. Investigation showed that for two years he had systematically practised dishonesty. He told the police that some of the money was spent on his family and some on liquor. Defending counsel said Smith was separated from his wife and had considerable demands on his earnings. Fellow workers had collected £25 towards restitution.
