Meal, Mufti Allowances Discussed By R.S.A.
(P.A.) WELLINGTON. This Day. At a meeting of the Dominion Executive Committee of the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association, it was pointed out that the association always contended that the allowance of 1 Oct per meal for members of the forces living outside camps, barracks, or stations, should be increased to 4/0 per day. It was decided to make further representations to the Government on the matter and also to request that pay and allowances in the case of women's services should also be investi-
gated. Replying to the association on the distinction between home service men and men who serve overseas in the matter of mufti allowance, the Minister for Defence (Mr Jones). states that “in fixing these amounts (viz., £7/10/- for home service men and £l2/10/- for those who serve overseas), the ■ Government reviewed all aspects of the question and it can be taken that the allowances approved in each category represents its wellconsidered opinion.” A report issued by the Dominion Executive Committee states that it is unable to extract from this reply why the difference is considered to he necessary. It was decided to make further representations in the matter and to submit reasons why the two grants should be equal, and further to request that the mufti grant to home service men should be made retrospective in the case of men who served continuously for 12 months or over, prior to April 1, 1942.
