Highlights Of Supplementary Estimates

The Supplementary Estimates, including annual appropriations totalling £711,151, separate accounts £186,649, and public works fund £305,150 were introduced by Governor-General’s Message in the House of Representatives yesterday. Compassionate Grant Among the interesting items included in these estimates is a vote of £2500 in the Prime Minister's Department for preliminary expenses towards the establishment of a New. Zealand legation at Washington, and a compassionate grant of £SOO to the widow of Captain W. J. Lyon, M.P., who was recently killed in action in Crete. Armed Forces Appeal Boards Under the heading of National Service Department £3195 is voted for salaries of armed forces appeal boards and special tribunals and £4395 for office and travelling expenses of appeal boards and tribunals. Police Launches The vote of £20,578 for the Police Department includes £10,512 for salaries, £IOOO for house allowance, £4500 for the purchase of launches and £IOOO for their maintenance. The launches are for police duty at Auckland, Wellington and Lyttelton, and six officers are to be on this duty at each port. War Damages War Damages Fund vote is also included in the estimates for the first time. It is a comparatively small amount of £1650, mainly providing for office and travelling expenses, etc. Greece-Crete Pensions Under the heading of Social Security Department, is an additional amount of £275,000 for war pensions and allowances to cover casualties from Greece and Crete. Linen Flax A sum of £116,000 is being set aside in the Linen Flax Development Account for salaries, general administrative charges, erection of stores and factories, etc.
Agricultural Regulations “This is just an annual Bill to confirm and validate regulations made under the Agriculture (Emergency Powers) Act, 1934.’’ said the Minister for ' Marketing (Mr. Barclay), when the Agricultural Emergency Regulations Confirmation Bill was introduced by Governor-General’s Message. The Bill was read a first time. The Minister explained that each year regulations made must be confirmed during the session or they expired at the end of the session. The Bill comprised only one operative clause confirming seven sets of regulations set out in a schedule.
