Organising Trucks For County Work

In view of the number of trucks taken over by the Army Department, and resultant delay in getting county work carried out, consideration should be given to the question of negotiating with remaining truck owners to undertake county work. This recommendation was brought before the Whangarei County Council at its monthly meeting today by the clerk (Mr H. C. Hemphill), who said it appeared that some organisation in this direction would asist the Council materially at the present time, and probably obviate long delays in getting work carried out.

Temporary Release

Cr. A. Clarke said he wondered if the council could do anything with the Impressment Committee regarding the release of a number of trucks located in country districts, even if for only a short period. If anything of this nature could be done, it would be of great assistance in his own riding.

Cr. J. Morrison said he thought trucks were available in different parts of the county, and he moved that a list of trucks and drivers available for country work be obtained, the engineer to report to the next meeting of the Council. Some of the trucks which had been commandeered by the army authorities might be found to be available, he said. The information would be useful to riding members, said Cr. Clarke. The motion was carried.
