Asks Better Motor Camp Facilities
Improvement in facilities for motor camping was the subject of a letter from the Automobile Associalion (Auckland) to the monthly meeting of the Whangarei County Council today. The association stated that energetic steps were being taken in the south by local bodies and private motor camp authorities and so that Northland coulci maintain its popularity with campers, thus obtaining an increasing volume of tourist traffic, it was appealing to county councils for support.
It was recommended to the council that the adoption of the Camping Ground Regulations 1936 and the passing of suitable by-laws by the council would be of the greatest assistance Probably, it was stated, the chiel inspector of the Health Department at Whangarei could indicate the manner in which the by-laws would support the efforts of the department to improve amenities in the Whangarei district.
To put the regulations into effect in the Whangarei county would cost many hundreds of pounds, and supervisional costs also would be heavy, said the clerk (Mr. H. C. Hemphill). The only camps were under the control of the Waipu Cove and Ruakaka Domain Board.
The chairman (Mr. J. A. S. Mac Kay) said that there did not appear to be any great need for motor camps in the country. There was a particularly good motor camp in the town and it would be most expensive for the council to carry out the regulations in the county. The letter was received.
