Mangonui Retains Northland Shield
CRICKET
Playing against a Hokianga eleven, at Kohukohu, on Saturday, the visiting Mangonui team defeated the home side by a comfortable margin of 60 runs. Mangonui therefore retains the Northland Shield for 1941.
Mangonui, who batted first, put 83 on the board, of which S. Switzer was responsible for 31. Bowling, Crane took 5 for 45, Irving 2 for 0, and S. Mansbridge 2 for 1.
Hokianga’s innings was nothing less than a collapse, the total score for the side being 30, of which Irving accounted for seven. C. Foster took 5 for 6, and A. Thompson 3 for 23.
Mangonui’s second innings opened brightly, and resulted in 107 being on the board when they declared for 4 wickets down. N. Rogers played good cricket to gain 63 not out for his side. Bowling: E. Cook took 2 for 14 and S, Mansbridge 1 for 7. Hokianga’s second venture at the crease, which resulted in 100 runs being recorded for the loss of 6 wickets at the call of time, produced some bright spots, N. Fergusson 38, and S. Mansbridge 26, being the foremost run-getters.
