Russian naval activities continued, and a German second-class cruiser was sunk. There was stubborn fighting on the Eastern Front, and the Russians claimed to have taken many prisoners. The Turks decided to abandon the campaign in Egypt and concentrate all forces at the Dardanelles. The Sultan could not face the prospect of being turned out of Constantinople and. threatened to resign.
