Miss Elizabeth Tyler Smith, of Epsom. Auckland, will attain her hundredth birthday next Thursday. She is looking forward with keen anticipation to the event, * * * * The death has occurred of Mr Percy David Gower Jones, Collector ol Customs at Nelson for the past two years. Mr Jones commenced with the department in Christchurch, and Intel was at Timaru and Wanganui, and for 20 years at Auckland. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. **V * * Mr Gordon Thompson, son of Mr and Mrs H. W. Thompson, of Mcrningside Road, was one of the 22 selected to train for the Royal Navy and joined H.M.S. Philomel last week. There were well over 700 applicants, and of these 97 were examined personally. Of the 18 wculd-be naval volunteers from Whangarei, four went to Auckland for this final test, Gordon Thompson, who began the year at the Whangarei High School, being the only one accepted.
