Minister On Farm Labour Question
[Per Press Association. Copyright .] WELLINGTON, This Day.
Remarks made at Dunedin about a shortage of farm labour were commented on today by the Minister for Labour (Mr. Webb) who said that this was the first intimation he had had from the south about difficulty in obtaining labour. On the department’s books at present there were 107 vacancies, 96 for experienced men and 12 for inexperienced.
The department had 17 experienced and 218 inexperienced men awaiting farm work.
Vacancies for inexperienced men would be filled immediately and the 17 experienced men would be placed.
Mr. Webb said that he was amazed at the sweeping statements made by Mr. Sim, as the Farmers’ Union had not approached him. The department was doing its best to help farmers, both with subsidies and with labour*
