N.Z. Has Everything At Stake In The War
[Special to “Northern Advocate”] AUCKLAND, This Day. Dr. Halliday Sutherland, author of “The Arches of the Years,” “Lapland Journey” and other well-known books of autobiography ,and travel, said in an interview yesterday that he found no marked difference in temperament, or even in speech, between New Zealanders and their cousins in the Old Country. “In New Zealand, the people speak very much like English or Scots folk. There is quite a marked Scots accent in some places. If any general tendency exists, it seems to be in that direction, but so far I have not noticed anything like a ‘Colonial accent.’ Good Grasp of Situation. “Your Government appears to have a good grasp of the war situation. I met the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, and I was much struck by his capability and sincerity. “It is obvious to anyone from Britain that New Zealand has everything at stake in this war. "Where would she be without the Empire’s support, and what would; happen to her if the Empire were defeated? “The result of defeat would be simply too awful to contemplate. I have no doubt that New Zealanders realise"that.”
