North Championship Swimming Tonight

Another fine programme will be staged by the Whangaref Swimming ’ Club at the School Baths this evening, when Northland championship events will be contested. Good fields have entered for all events, and the excellent competition of other carnivals this season should be repeated. In the 220yds Northland championship the Kaikohe champion, Goodhue, appears to have the best chance, as Fairley will not be competing. Miss Griffin, of Kaikohe, will probably fight it out with the local men for the next place. A field of 14 has entered for the club championship, with Rice, Hayes and Alach promising most opposition in a race which should bring a new local record. Relay Contest. Two excellent teams will contest the relay between Whangarei and Kaikohe, the chances of success resting slightly with the local club. Miss Provan promises to annex the junior girls’ 50yds, and Rice may fight out with Haden, Nisbet and Harrison the 50yds junior boys’ event. Several new entrants will contest the intermediate girls’ 50yds, which has drawn a field of 12. Miss Richards, of Kaikohe, on the back mark, should show up, but Miss A. Stewart, who is returning to swimming, may surprise. Miss Cavanagh, Miss Dudding and Miss Kennett are all in form and a great race seems certain. First-class racing shpuld mark the intermediate boys’ 100yds championship. Mortimore probably will be the most difficult to beat, with Cavanagh and Hegley following. Records Expected.

Miss Griffin appears to dominate the field in the ladies’ 50yds, but opposition should come from Miss Cavanagh, with the possibility of an upset by new entrants. The intermediate boys’ 50yds has also drawn a big field, and chances favour Goodhue and Hegley, with L. Newberry and O. Hafgh up close. In a record field in the men’s 66 2-3yds Hayes and Thompson promise most opposition, with Webb in close proximity. Every indication of keen competition is given and the championship meeting should result in new figures in times and gate receipts.
