Paddy’s Market Raises Funds For Soldiers
Every possible effort on behalf of the soldiers is being made by the Women’s Activities Sub-committee of the Whangarei Patriotic Committee. Today, in the Town Hall, a Paddy’s Market to raise funds was opened.
The enthusiasm of committee members was demonstrated in the lay-out of stalls and the fine quality of goods offered to the public. That enthusiasm was rewarded in the attendance of the public for, from the time the market was opened, there was a steady influx of visitors and an equally ready demand for the goods offered. Borough Council employees arrived at the hall early this morning to carry out the decorations with flags and greenery, and this attention to detail made a picturesque and appropriate setting for the well-laden stalls. ‘ The proscenium and front of the stage on which tables for refreshments were laid was beautifully decorated by members of the Women’s Emergency Committee, who had j charge of this department. Variety of Commodities. Other stalls were mixed, offering a variety of commodities, including vegetables, fruit, jam, cake and fancy goods. The Women’s Club, the National Council of Women, and the PanPacific Women’s Association combined in the management of one stall, as did the Red Cross Association. Registered Nurses’ Association and the Women’s Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, while others were conducted by the borough council staff and the Municipal Band, the Ladies’ Gardening Club and country women.
Competitions were also a popular feature of the market. The market will continue tonight, when a musical programme in which local artists will be assisted by the Municipal Band and the Whangarei and County Pipe Band will be staged. The bands will also march through the streets and play in front of the Town Hall.
