First of the Season
Gay Son, who failed to justify his favouritism, in the open sprint on the first day at Wanganui last September, is due to commence his present season’s racing in the same event tomorrow. Kena’s Prospects. Kena has been unlucky in the races he has had since his transfer to Trentham, but the field that will oppose him in the Marangai Handicap at Wanganui to-morrow is not so strong as those he has recently been facing.
A Likely Maiden. ( Malik Kafur, an Australian-bred son of Fox Earth, had only one race as a juvenile last season, but he then impressed as a colt who should make good, and it is interesting to note his entry in the maiden events at Wanganui this week.
A Stayer. It is the opinion of Beaulivre’s former trainer, H. A. Telford, that the colt is the best-winded horse he had ever had under his care, and he believes that he will go any distance on an easy preparation, because of his apparent inheritance of the best of the Son-in-Law stamina.
Much-Travelletl Jockey,
The jockey Ben Rosen, who had his first mount for 16 months when he finished third on Mustapha in the Moorefield Handicap on August 19. has ridden in more countries than any other jockey in Australia. Ho lias steered horses past the post in England, Africa, New Zealand, India, France, Czechoslovakia, Burma and Mauritius. Rosen was ill for many months after returning to Australia, and started track riding only six weeks ago.
Still Hoping. Nothing damps the ardour of Miss D. Paget. She has given wonderful prices for yearlings without getting anything approaching an adequate return. She keeps on buying in the hope that she will yet get hold of a Derby winner, even if she fails to breed one. At her stud she has a great collection of high-priced mares. At Newmarket: last month she outstayed everyone in bidding for the Solario—Panic yearling, but had.Ho go to 4500 guineas to get him.
