Fighting In Carpathians

A further Zurich message states there has been heavy fighting between the Germans and Poles in the Carpathian mountains to the south and south-east of Silesia. The bitterest battles were fought in the mountainous parts near Jurgov and Zakopane, the Germans crossing the Carpathian ridge and beating back the Polish defenders. The Poles counterattacked and regained part of the lost ground. Detachments of Poles are engaged in guerilla warfare in the rear of the German line.

In Berlin, an army communique was issued claiming that the German troops had occupied Teschen. Later a further High Command communique said that the advance had been continued at all points. German troops, with the help of aircraft, had quickly forced the Jablunka Pass, which crosses the Carpathians at 1810 feet at the lower end of Silesia.
