Legitimate Stage Will Not Be Lost
“Although overshadowed today by the moving pictures, the legitimate stage will never be lost,” was the opinion expressed by Miss Anita Webster, of Auckland, on Saturday night. She was adjudicating at the final session of the Whangarei Federation of Women’s Institutes’ annual drama festival in the Town Hall.
The stage carried a personal touch which the films could never equal, said Miss Webster, in addressing both players and performers at the end of the evening. New Zealand was, by reason of its geographical position, cut off from the theatre, and it was for this reason that small amateur societies should be encouraged. She suggested that next year the federation should include a Shakespearean section in its festival. “Some of the amateurs have surprised me,” she said in commenting on the standard of dramatic art as a whole manifested at the festival, “The amateur is the forerunner of the professional artist,” she concluded.
