Snow Swept South

t Per Press Association. Copyright.'] INVERCARGILL, This Day.

The danger of serious flooding in most parts of Southland has been averted by more snowfalls in the back country. The flooding which occurred on Friday resulted from a sudden thaw on the lower country, but more snow has now stopped the thaw in the back districts, where serious flooding was likely to start. The main road to Dunedm is now open, but there are still a few minor roads blocked by flooding.

Another Severe Storm

In Canterbury

f Per Press Association. Copyright.] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.

A severe storm with heavy falls of snow again swept Canterbury yesterday. Banks Peninsula once more bore the brunt of the storm, and the second fall, with the thaw from the first, has increased the danger of flooding on the lower levels.

At Little River, Lake Forsyth had risen considerably yesterday, and at one stretch of the road from Christchurch water was lying a foot deep at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Stock losses have occurred all over Banks Peninsula, but not in other parts of the province. The part most affected is Pigeon Bay, where a resident said he had lost 200 ewes. Another farmer lost about 100. In Christchurch two inches of snow had fallen yesterday morning, but it quickly began to thaw, and further rain and snow caused the streets to be covered with slippery slush. There was an exceptionally heavy fall of snow at Arthur’s Pass, where six inches fell in two hours.
