Centennial Dance At Umawera
The dance organised by the WaihauMangamuka Centennial Committee proved to be a very successful function, for, in spite of the bitterly cold night, a large number of patrons attended.
Music was provided by the popular combination, Heko Clarke’s swing band, and this rhythm kept patrons on the floor until an early hour. Mr John Whittaker was M.C. The hall had been prettily decorated with red, white and blue streamers overhead, while nikau fronds lined the walls and the orchestral stage. The committee responsible for the arrangements were Mesdames Neill and Walker and Messrs O. O. Ferry, J. W. Julian, H. Cheeseman, G. V. Cauty, A. Maxwell and members of the Umawera Settlers’ Association. An excellent supper had been provided by the lady members of the committee. Door takings amounted to just over £ll. A competition for two cooked fowls was won by Miss Mae Clark, of Kohukohu.
Mrs W. Postlewaight and partner won a Monte Carlo waltz and Mr and Mrs Louis Tribe won a spot waltz. Among the dancers were noticed Mesdames O. O. Perry, black georgette with cherry and gold velvet wrap; G. H. Neill, navy crepe de chine; Phil Bindon, black lace; B. Chapman, white satin with red sash; T. A. Ogle, cyclaman taffeta; R.
