Winter Show Catering. Tenders are to be called for the catering at the 1940 Whangarei Winter Exhibition, decision to this effect being reached by the committee of the A. and P. Society last nfght. * * * Profesional Wrestling. Earl McCready and King Kong Cox drew last night in a strenuous wrestling match at Wellington, before a crowded house. No falls were registered. •* * * . Dog’s Strange Ride. Many strange articles are at times found in motor cars, but the exprience of a Tangowahine resident the other evening when he arrivd home with a strange dog sitting on the running board will be hard to beat. The resident had attended a theatre in Dargaville and when he came out, promptly entered his car and drove home and it was not until he was putting the car in his garage that he noticed the dog sitting on the running board. The sequel is that he is now endeavouring to locate the owner of the dog. Death of a Boy. In reporting the death of a five-year-old boy, Arthur Johnson, at the District Hospital, it was stated yesterday that he was admitted to the institution some days after he had been injured at his home, and that an X-ray examination had revealed a fracture of the right leg. This, we learn from the hospital authorities, was nut the case. The leg was not fractured, but the boy was suffering from severe sores, which developed into olood poisoning, from which he died. His leg was not put in plaster.

* * * Thoroughly satisfied and delighted with the bargains, is the unanimous verdict of shoppers at Henry Wilsons great mid-winter sale. In the shclwroom. frocks, jumper suits, cardigans, and coats are offering almost at halfprice; while in the Manchester department, towels, sheeting, etc., can be picked up at groat savings.

Bay Basketball. Further games played in the Bay of Islands’ Basketball Association’s competition on Saturday resulted in Te Ahuahu 17, defeating Kaikohe B, 7; and Ngapuhi 19, defeating Okaihau 17. Kaikohe A and Ngawha had byes. * * * Five-Bay Exhibition. Any suggestion that the period of the 1940 Northland Centennial Winter Exhibition should be extended from the present duration to five days, was viewed with disfavour by the committee of the Whangarei A. and P. Society last night. A longer period would bring dissatisfaction among exhibitor’s and would not give ' increased gate-takings, said the president, Mr H. W. James. On the motion of Mr -F. Howie, the meeting agreed that the .five-day period should be adhered to. ! * ¥■ * Hollow Fraud. “That entries in the decorated cake section shall be cakes, and not boxes,” was a recommendation in connection with the baking section of the Whangarei Winter Exhibition which raised a laugh when received by the committee of the A. and P. Society last night. The story was told that at this year’s exhibition, one competitor, in good faith, had submitted an entry in which a beautiful specimen of the cake-icers’ art had been built up over a box, and its hollowness had only been revealed on close inspection. It was then forthwith disqualified.

Fewer Cows Under Test. <■ The number of cows tested in the Northern Wairoa Association’s area fell from 7414 in 1937-38 to 6404 last year, a reduction of 1010. The highest herds in the association during the season ware: —Under 40 cows: Mr W. A. Kay, with 36 cows, averaging 3461bs fat in 247 days; 41 to 75 cows: Mr E. Cullen, with 63 cows, averaging 3241bs fat in 254 days; over 75 cows: Mr R. Simpkin, with 100 cows, averaging 2251bs fat in 226 days. Mr Johansson congratulated these members on their achievement. The balance sheet disclosed a loss of £6B 17/, as against a profit of £ll7 2/5 for lase year.
