Labour Wins The Wilmot Seat

(Received 2.30 p.m.) , LAUNCESTON, This Day

Mr L. Slirr (Labour) won the Wilmot by-election from Mr J. Guy (United Australia Party) by 69 votes after the preferences had been distributed. The scat was made vacant by the death of the late Prime Minister, Mr J. A. Lyons, and counting at first showed a lead for Mr Guy, who was expected to win the seat. There wore six candidates, two Labour, throe United Australia and one Independent.
