Historical And Early Settlers’ Committees
An endeavour will be made to form an historical and Early Settlers’ Centennial Committee in each riding of the Whangarei County Council. Decision to this effect was made last night by the Historical and Early Settlers’ sub-committee of Sub-Zone A 5.
These committees will be asked to arrange reunions in each, district in honour of the early pioneers. It is hoped that these reunions will be held early in 1940 and that a large central parade ,and reunion will be held following these smaller gatherings.
As it is essential that such a function be held when the weather is mild, the committee decided last night to recommend strongly that the committees arrange their functions early. Roll of Honour. The local committees, too, will bo asked to co-operate in the compiling of a roll of honour of the early pioneers.
The gathering of historical records of value, manuscripts, early photos and accounts of the early life of the pioneers, will also be delegated to these committees, as it is felt that their local knowledge will make this task a comparatively easy one. It was decided to ask, through the newspapers, owners of such valuable historical data to give the committee the opportunity of preserving or copying such records.
