Waipu
1 The eighth birthday of the Waipu j Women's Institute was celebrated in .the Waipu Public Hal 1 ., which had
been beautifully decorated in the institute colours of heliotrope and green and white. An interesting programme
was enjoyed by a largo audience. Apart from individual items two outstanding contributions were short plays. The first, entitled “Complications,” was performed by Misses A. Iligham and P. Higham. and Messrs. Jack Durham and L. Bartlett.
The second play was performed by Mesdarnes J. D. Finlayson and J. C. McKay, Miss Bollard and Messrs. H. Field and L. Tweedie and R. McKenzie.
Mr. J. Connell, of Whangarei, gave three amusing recitations and a song by Mr. Field was accompanied by eight rustic dancers in a Sir Roger do Coverley. Before supper was served a beautifully iced birthday cake was cut by the president, Mrs. Donaldson. The cake was made by Mrs. A. W. McKay and iced by Mrs. Cullen. Dainty bouquets were presented to Mrs. Donaldson and also to the Institute secretary, Mrs. Young. An enjoyable dance followed. Mr. L. Bartlett acting as M.C. Kiripaka Mrs Ciomo presided at the monthly meeting of the Kiripaka Institute, which was held last Saturday. The competition. ‘Three varieties of sweets,” was won by Mrs Clemo, with Miss Johnston second and Mrs Simmonds third.
The roll call, “a verse of poetry learnt at school,” proved very amusing. It was decided that next month each member should bring an article for the trading stall at the Winter Show. Mrs Robison, Poroti, assisted by Mrs G. Woolley, provided the social part of the afternoon, which included part sengs, community singing, games and competitions. Mrs Robison also started the ‘-rolling 1/-” for Institute funds. A hearty vote of thanks and three cheers to the visitors for their kindness in providing the entertainment, concluded one of the most enjoyable afternoons ever spent.
Waikiekie-Waiotira
The May mooting was held at Mrs 11. Yearbury’s residence, Waiolira, recently. There was a fair attendance, and tiic president. Mrs R. Exley. was in the chair.
The roll call, “kitchen donTs,” was well answered and some good hints came forward.
Two competitions were held, both showing very good work, and resulted: Pikelets, Mrs J. Stephen 1. Mrs S. Mason 2. Ruched cushion: Mrs A. Gailoy 1, Mrs IT. Yearbury 2. A successful “bring and buy” was held, and a competition, “jumbled birds' names,” provided by Mrs S. Mason, was won by Mrs H. Thomas.
A demonstration of smocking given by Mrs D. M, Walker, proved most instructive. and was much appreciated. A presentation was made to Miss Joan Mclntosh, who is leaving the district.
A dainty luncheon was served by the hostesses, Mrs H. Yearbury and Mrs S. Mason, A happy day was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem. Mriapouri The Matapouri Women’s Institute’s monthly meeting drew a fair attendance and splendid entries in the competitions were received. Business was to arrange for an Early Victorian peric'd fancy dress dance for Centennial funds, to be held on June 30 and to alter the date of the next meeting to Tuesday, June 20, on account of the Kiripaka group meeting on June 21 at Whareora.
Mrs Clements gave an interesting talk on Queen Victoria. A first aid talk and demonstration of bandaging were also part of the programme.
Mrs T. Clements and Mrs Morrison tied for first place in the thrift article competition and Mrs Watson was first with the best bloom from her garden. Mrs T. Clements won the hidden flower names competition and Mrs McMarth and Miss Mason tied for a word
competition. Misses Z. Wellington and May Jenkins were hostesses. Singing of the Institute peace song brought a happy afternoon to a close.
