Figure Enemy No. 1

Most women fear the middle-aged spread—but only in a vague it-can’t-happen-to-me sort of way. And suddenly, too late, they discover in their mirrors that they have spread. It is too late for prevention; but there is plenty to be done in the way of “cure.” If “spread” is the problem, select a one-piece foundation garment that is more snug about the hips than anywhere else —giving a feeling of support from below, yet not too loose through the waist and bust either. If a separate corset and bra for some occasions is preferred, choose a corset well boned through the back and front panels, and the bra should be of the uplift and well-rounded type.

Foundations are so lovely these days, a woman is often tempted to buy something not correct for her type of figure, simply because she adores the design or fabric, or the talon fastening, or some such thing. Don’t let this happen. Bear this in mind. When the type of figure has a heavier base than top, every foundation bought should be designed to bring in the widest points, and thus bring into better proportion the bustline and hipline. In other words, one should feel it definitely controlling about the hips and thighs. And it should definitely be a long-line garment to hold the thighs. In trying the garment on, sit down in it to see that it does not cut into the thighs, and that it comes well down over the rear to avoid the riding up that is the fault of a too-short corset.
