Mounted Rifles Parade Tomorrow
Whangarei will see the First Composite Mounted Rifles oh parade tomorrow morning. Now undergoing annual training at Kensington Park, the 450 men attached to the regiment will leave the camp at 10 a.m., and headed by the band of the Auckland-East • Coast Mounted Rifles, will march through the town. The Mayor, Mr W. Jones, will take the salute at the Town Hall. • Tomorrow afternoon the regiment will hold i'ts annual sports at the park, the public being invited to attend and witness the steeplechase, tent-pegging and other i competitions. On Sunday afternoon the camp will be thrown open to visitors, and football matches will be played between the territorials and the Hikurangi senior and Old Boys’ junior Rugby teams. Yesterday’s “Battle.” Under the eye of Colonel Weir, officer commanding the Northern Military District, the regiment again conducted' tactical exercises yesterday afternoon,
“B” Squadron, the Waikatos, who had been repulsed after attempted attacks on Whangarei at Maunu and Portland Road on Wednesday afternoon and evening, again returned to the attack, but were intercepted by “A” and “C” Squadrons, the AucklandEast Coast and North Auckland divisions, at Three Mile Bush Road. Although eventually driven off, the invaders achieved more success than in their previous actions, this time penetrating as far as the railway line at Kamo before being driven off. v.; Commanding. Officer Pleased. .... Lieut.-Colonel C. J. Pierce, officer in command of the regiment, again expressed satisfaction with the manner in which the exercises were carried out. “Our experience at Kensington Park is identical with what has come to be expected with most New Zealand troops,” he added. “The men have quickly shaken down to camp routine and are performing their duties with the utmost keenness and commendable efficiency.” Today is a comparatively quiet day at the camp, the men practising for tomorrow’s ceremonial parade and sports.
