Matarau Young Farmers Speak Well In Debate
At the monthly meeting of the Matarau Young Farmers’ Club the members debated “That the farmer of today is better off than the farmer of 50 years ago.”. The affirmative case was presented by Messrs H. G. Agnew, W. A. Rushbrook and F. L. Thorburn. The negative argument was taken by Messrs I. D. Bodle, T. Brown, R. Martin and R. Cossill.
The standard of the speakers, many of whom were making their maiden speech, was very high. One of these worthy of special mention was Mr Thorburn, who made an extempore speech, having been asked, a few minutes before the debate, to replace a member who was unavoidably absent. Mr R. Martin’s speech was also outstanding, both for humour and eloquence.
Mr E. B. Glanville, of the Department of Agriculture, acted as judge. In giving his decision in favour of the negative, he said he was very impressed by the standard of the debate. He also gave the members some helpful criticism.
